Roleplay Terms
RP - This basically stands for Role Play. It refers to a situation of fictional context whereby you portray yourself as someone you are not. It allows you to be whatever you want (within limits of course) as though you were playing a part in a large multi-leveled interactive movie. Eg, you can be anything from Jutsu wielding Shinobi or a Healer (for ease of explanation) to an S-Class character (provided you are happy to be scoffed at as a power gamer....see later in the glossary for explanation of that term.)
Character - the fictional person/being that you portray whilst roleplaying.
IC - Stands for In Character. If you are talking "IC" it means you are speaking with the voice and words of your character.
OOC - Out Of Character. This means you are speaking with your OWN voice and not the voice of your character. In a roleplay thread this is often denoted by a set of double parentheses on either side of your statement. eg ((My computer just stuffed up...sorry guys)). Chattering too much OOCly in a roleplay thread is usually frowned upon by stricter roleplayers.
Strict RP - Ocassionally one might see this in a topic somewhere. This means that the thread(or site) will not accept very much in the way of Out Of Character (OOC) statements. So if you walk in there talking about your latest computer upgrade, expect to be warned, cautioned and/or kicked from said thread/site.
Rper - Anyone that RolePlays. Being that anyone who has a character in a roleplay environment. Usually used to describe someone that roleplays reasonably often or well.
Soft Rper - Describes a roleplayer who enjoys roleplay not for the fighting at all, but only for the social interaction. These sorts of players rarely look for conflict or enjoy it at all, but more often than not just enjoy the concept of hanging out in a tavern and having their characters chatting with others idly.
Medium Rper - This is obviously a step above the soft rper in their description. Not to say they are any better at all, only that they enjoy a slightly different sort of RP along the scale. A medium Rper tends to enjoy all facets of RP that they encounter. Fights as well as social interaction interest them. Mostly as part of a whole encompassment of their character.
Hard Rper - Hard Rpers are in it either entirely or very much mostly for the fighting. They love to conduct battles with their characters against other characters and not much else interests them. These sorts of characters often spend most of their time playing with bots or just organizing online engineered "wars".
Literate - Everyone has a different meaning for Literate, but it mostly means 'abilitye to write more than three sentences per post, exceptional grammar and spelling, and are able to string sentences together while making sense.' Some add extra things, such as 'a paragraph per post or more(for each character--when doubling), no one liners, give voice to character, ect.'
Semi-Literate - A second level, between literate and illiterate. It's different for everyone. Most have the ability to spell and use good grammar, have at least two sentences per post, and their characters are somewhat thought out.'
Illiterate - The 'lowest' form of roleplaying. Most 'Illiterates' use PP, GM, have Sues, use chatspeak, (1337speak), almost always use oneliners, and haven't given their characters much thought.
No-Nos
PowerGamer - A powergamer is a roleplayer who's main interest revolves around going on a power trip. They often enjoy portraying characters such as Gods, Ancient Red Dragons or ultimately powerful mages. Characters who never display flaws or weaknesses are powergamers.
Mary(Gary)-Sue - Means a perfect character without ANY flaws. Unrealistic, which annoys many. No roleplay is going to actually go anywhere if there are tons on blonds with perfect hair and clear blue eyes that show their souls and thoughts. And that no matter what they do they simply can't be wrong. These are just ew, just a total and disgusting ew.
PowerPlay - Powerplaying is when one roleplayer controls another roleplayer's character. Sometimes, not only one, but multiple at a time. Usually happens in a fighting roleplay or anything with battling in it. For instance, a PPing roleplayer wouldn't give someone a chance to reply by saying, "Joe shot at Larry. Larry got shot on the shoulder, flew back and died."
But, don't get too conscious about PPing so that it takes 10 posts for two people to get in a car. It's annoying for the other person, and probably nerve-wracking for you.
God-Modding - God-Modding is when a character is Ultra Powerful, thus using the word 'God.' In 'Gifted' roleplays or any roleplays with powers, mind reading, future seeing, having all elements, and the ability to control the other player is considered a God-Modding power. There are rare exceptions for this, such as a God/Goddess roleplay or an AngelxDemon pairing and someone is playing God or Satan. But even those have a limit, for Kami doesn't control all elements, nor does he have the power to tell the future and read someone's mind. Even Gods need to ask for help.
Auto-hit - This describes a fighting action whereby a character is attacking another character and ASSUMES to have hit them without the other characters response being considered. eg "Raven swings his sword through the air and slices June's guts open like he was splitting a ripe melon." This sort of action is generally frowned upon in RP communities.
In order to change such a post so that it is not considered an autohit you would use something such as; "Raven swings his sword through the air, the blade angled in the hope that June's side would be split like a ripe melon." This gives the opponent a chance to respond, and makes for good roleplay relations and less Drama. Remember, everytime you Drama, a Llama dies.
